September Newsletter from Akasha Clothing

September 30, 2008

Where has September gone?! We're having some great autumn weather here in Calgary, which is a nice treat, as that isn't always the case. The evenings are getting dark earlier and earlier...which is good encouragement to get out of the garden and sit down in front of the sewing machine!

Let me start out by apologizing to all of you that receive this newsletter via traditional email. I made a rookie mistake last month...and included your email address in the "to" line for all to see. I apologize, and will certainly attempt to not repeat that mistake. That's another good reason to subscribe to the newsletter via the website and not rely upon my sometimes faulty email skills.

Your Sewing Space

We're in the middle of some major "refresh" activities at our house. I can't call it a renovation, but it is definitely in the realm of makeover. In addition to shopping for new furniture and light fixtures, there has been non-stop painting going on for the last 2 weeks. (Thank goodness for husbands willing to give up their vacation in the name of home improvement!) When it is all done, I'll have moved my sewing room from the basement to a much smaller, but brighter and sunnier room upstairs. I can hardly wait!

What does your sewing room look like? There is a new magazine called Studios coming out this fall from Interweave Press, and it is dedicated to sewing rooms and studios. I'd love to hear what your space looks like, and how your organize all your stuff. Send photos. I'll add a section to the website about sewing room organization.

Shows

Creative Stitches and Crafting Alive - Calgary - Sept 26 and 27/08. Akasha was there with a booth, complete with the full line of patterns, interlining, buttons, and some fabrics. I presented 3 seminars during the show - 20 Designer Tips (the same presentation that Pati Palmer did at the Pullayup show to 900 attendees!) and Surface Texture and Embellishments (a quick look at how to change the look of a fabric using surface techniques...just plain fun!). All 3 seminars were standing room only, which was great to see. Thanks to all of you that stopped by to say hello.

Creative Stitches and Crafting Alive - Edmonton - Oct 3 and 4/08. Just like the Calgary show...a few miles north, and usually with more focus on garments than the Calgary show. I'm looking forward to meeting some of the Edmonton sewing enthusiasts. I'll be holding the 20 Designer Tips seminar and the Creating Textures seminars. Stop by Booth 202 if you're in Edmonton on the weekend.
